Zirconia Crowns in Gurgaon
Zirconia crowns in Gurgaon may be full-contour, with the whole crown formed from zirconia, or layered, with an outer aesthetic veneer on a zirconia framework; the choice depends on the tooth and bite. At Marwaha Dental Clinic in DLF Phase 2, Gurugram, Dr Divya Marwaha can assess that design decision and whether a crown suits the tooth. She is the clinic’s founder and an experienced dental surgeon; MDC has served patients since 2004. A crown may be considered for a broken or severely weakened natural tooth or one with a large filling and little remaining support.
The decision begins with whether a crown is appropriate at all. Zirconia is one crown material, and its construction can be full-contour or veneered; it does not remove the need to consider how much natural tooth must be prepared and what the bite will place on the restoration.

When a damaged tooth may need a crown
A crown covers a prepared tooth to restore its shape and function. A large filling with limited remaining tooth tissue, or a broken or severely weakened tooth, may lead a dentist to discuss one. Some teeth can instead be rebuilt with an adhesive tooth-coloured filling when the defect and bite make that suitable. Assessment includes decay risk, cleaning, gum health and bite; grinding can complicate planning but does not automatically rule a crown out. How monolithic and veneered zirconia crowns differ
Zirconia crowns are made from zirconium dioxide ceramic. A monolithic crown is made in full contour from zirconia. A veneered version has a zirconia framework with an aesthetic veneering layer. Zirconia products differ in translucency, mechanical properties and permitted indications, so “zirconia” does not describe one interchangeable design. A porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crown instead has porcelain over a metal substructure; an all-ceramic crown has no metal substructure. These descriptions help frame a discussion, but they do not identify which design is right for a particular tooth. Cleveland Clinic: Dental crowns · Ivoclar: IPS e.max ZirCAD
A clinical review of tooth-supported crowns and bridges reported fewer chipping complications with monolithic than porcelain-veneered zirconia. Most included studies were retrospective, follow-up periods differed and zirconia grades were incompletely reported. That finding does not prove that every monolithic single crown is superior or cannot fracture. Clinical review
What tooth preparation means
Preparing a natural tooth removes tooth structure irreversibly; removed enamel does not grow back. This is different from early surface damage that may be remineralised. Conventional crown fabrication uses an impression or digital scan after preparation. Before cementing the definitive crown, the dentist checks its fit and comfort. If you feel pain during treatment, tell the dentist so numbing can be adjusted as needed; the numbing plan is individual. Cleveland Clinic: Dental crowns · Dental Health Foundation: Crowns
Care, possible problems and what to do
Some sensitivity can occur after preparation and fitting. An ill-fitting crown can trap bacteria and contribute to decay in the remaining natural tooth. Allergic reactions associated with crowns are uncommon; this general information does not make a particular material risk-free. Crown longevity varies with care and individual circumstances, so no fixed lifespan is promised.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth, limit frequent sugar exposure, avoid biting hard objects and attend check-ups on the schedule advised for you. A loose, cracked or sharp-edged crown should be assessed by a dentist. Sensitivity may be temporary, but pain after fitting that keeps you awake at night should also be assessed. Frequently Asked Questions
A crown may be considered for a broken or severely weakened tooth, or one with a large filling and too little remaining tooth tissue. The dentist assesses the tooth and bite; some defects may suit an adhesive filling instead.
Zirconia crowns use zirconium dioxide ceramic. Some are full-contour (monolithic) zirconia; others combine a zirconia framework with a veneering layer.
Yes. Crown preparation removes natural tooth structure irreversibly. Ask what preparation is proposed and whether a less extensive restoration suits the tooth.
Arrange dental assessment for a loose, cracked or sharp-edged crown. If pain after fitting keeps you awake at night, seek dental assessment as well.
