Is TMJ Curable? How Long Jaw Pain Usually Lasts and What Helps
Often, TMJ problems settle with time and simple care, even though doctors do not usually describe TMD as "curable". The NHS says TMD is not usually serious and generally gets better on its own. NIDCR adds that many TMDs last only a short time, though some become long-lasting. Whether it fully settles depends on the type of problem and how long it has been there. NHS: TMD · NIDCR: TMD.

How long does TMJ pain usually last?
There is no fixed timeline. NIDCR says symptoms go away without treatment for many people. It also says many jaw joint and muscle problems are temporary and do not get worse. NIDCR: TMD.
TMD is not one condition. NIDCR groups it into three types: joint problems (including disc problems), chewing-muscle problems, and headaches linked with TMD. An assessment helps work out which type you have. NIDCR: TMD.
Why do some TMJ problems last longer?
In some people, TMD becomes chronic, meaning long-lasting. Researchers think a mix of factors plays a part: genes, psychological and life stress, and how a person perceives pain. TMD is also about twice as common in women as in men. NIDCR: TMD.
Long-lasting TMD often appears alongside other conditions. NIDCR lists headaches, back pain, sleep problems, irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia. If you have any of these, mention them at your appointment. NIDCR: TMD.
What usually happens, and what helps
| Situation | What usually happens | What usually helps |
|---|---|---|
| New jaw pain or tight muscles | Often settles on its own | Soft food, heat or cold, avoiding gum and wide yawning |
| Painless clicking | Common and usually needs no treatment | Keep an eye on it; get checked if pain or locking starts |
| Pain that keeps returning | Can become long-lasting for some people | Assessment, self-management, physiotherapy or behavioural care |
| Jaw locking or limited opening | Needs prompt attention | An urgent appointment |

What helps TMJ get better?
The NHS suggests soft food such as pasta, omelettes and soup. Hold an ice pack or a wrapped heat pack to the jaw, whichever feels better. Avoid chewing gum or pen tops, biting food with your front teeth, clenching your teeth and yawning too wide. NHS: TMD.
For longer-lasting TMD, NIDCR describes self-management: things you can do yourself. These include learning about your type of TMD, practising relaxation, setting goals and staying involved in activities that matter to you. NIDCR: TMD.
If simple care is not enough, other options include physiotherapy and behavioural approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Our article on TMJ treatment options compared explains each one and what the evidence says.
Two beliefs that can slow recovery
- "My bite or braces caused my TMJ." NIDCR says research does not support the belief that a bad bite or orthodontic treatment causes TMD.
- "Changing my bite will cure it." NIDCR says there is insufficient evidence that bite-changing treatments work for TMD, and these treatments make permanent changes.

When should you see a dentist?
Book an assessment if jaw pain is not settling, keeps coming back or affects eating. Ask for an urgent appointment if your jaw locks or you cannot open your mouth fully. Get urgent medical help if you cannot eat or drink, have frequent severe headaches or have vision problems. NHS: TMD.
